You can create a database in just seconds using Notion AI.

Creating a database with Notion AI is free on the Business or Enterprise plans. If you are not on those plans, Notion AI will use credits from your workspace, including any complimentary credits you may have available.

From a page

To create a database with Notion AI in an existing page:

  1. Create a new page and under Get started with, select Table. You can also open an existing page and use the slash command /database.

  2. Select Build with AI in the menu that appears.

  3. Give Notion AI details about the database you want. For example, you could ask it to make you a customer feedback tracker with priority levels, a status, and an assignee.

  4. You’ll get a preview of your database as well as some options for features to add or remove. You can also prompt Notion AI to make specific changes.

  5. Once your database looks good, select Continue.

  6. Choose how you prefer to visualize your database items and select Done.

From Home

To create a database with Notion AI from Home:

  1. In Home, toggle to Build mode in the Notion AI widget.

  2. Give Notion AI details about the database you want. For example, you could ask it to make you a customer feedback tracker with priority levels, a status, and an assignee.

  3. You’ll get a preview of your database as well as some options for features to add or remove. You can also prompt Notion AI to make specific changes.

  4. Once your database looks good, select Continue.

  5. Choose how you prefer to visualize your database items and select Done.

Note:

  • Notion AI can create new databases but can’t edit existing databases.

  • Notion AI can’t create pages in your database, database automations, forms, charts, or database page templates.

  • Databases created with Build mode in Home will be added to your workspace as a new page. If you want to use Notion AI to build a database in a specific page, navigate to that page and create a new database with Notion AI in that page. You can also move your database created by AI to another page in your workspace.

Using a database to store a large collection of meeting notes, tasks, or projects? Try using Notion AI on a database property to generate summaries, extract action items, and more.

Autofill has two options:

  • Basic Autofill is best for simple fills, like summaries, tagging, and translation. Basic Autofill is included in Business and Enterprise plans.

  • Custom Agent Autofill is best for more complex work like using web or workspace search and handling multi-step instructions. Custom Agent Autofill uses

Notion credits based on the work needed to complete each task.

Basic Autofill is designed for quick, straightforward fills. It works best when the answer can be generated from the content of the page.

Common examples:

  • Create summaries of page content

  • Extract key info from a page (like names, dates, or action items)

  • Translate content into another language

  • Tag or categorize entries using select or multi-select options

How to set up Basic Autofill

  1. In your database, hover over the property you want to fill and click the property name.

  2. Select AI Autofill (or Set up AI Autofill).

  3. Select Basic.

  4. Choose what you want Autofill to do (for example:

Summary, Translate, Key info, or Custom autofill).

  5. Choose when it should run (for example, manually, on page create, or on page edits) and save.

Basic Autofill does not browse the web. It uses the content in the specific row or page (not across all your Notion pages).

Custom Agent Autofill is for more advanced workflows. It can handle richer instructions and multi-step tasks.

Common examples:

  • Fill properties using workspace search to find related context.

  • Fill properties using web search (when enabled) and provide sources.

  • Apply more complex logic like “Only fill this property if Status is In Progress.”

  • Update multiple properties in one run based on the same set of instructions.

How to set up Custom Agent Autofill

  1. In your database, hover over the property you want to fill and click the property name.

  2. Select AI Autofill (or Set up AI Autofill).

  3. Select Custom Agent.

  4. Write clear instructions for what you want filled and how.

    • Example: “Summarize the page in 2 sentences. If the page mentions a deadline, extract it into the Due Date property. If no deadline is mentioned, leave Due Date empty.”

  5. If your workflow needs it, enable workspace search or web search in the agent settings.

  6. Choose when it should run (manual, on page create, on page edits, or schedule) and save.

If you only want to fill blank cells, add: “Only fill this property if it is empty.”
